Staveley Angling Association have approx 3 - 3.5 miles of mainly double bank fishing in the upper reaches of the river Kent (Lake District) for brown trout, sea trout and salmon. In addition to the wild brown trout population, a number of stocked brown trout are introduced to increase catch rates in the pools near the village. Fly fishing and catch and release is encouraged but anglers are permitted to take one stocked brown trout.
Every year there are wild brown trout of a very good size caught up to 5lbs. South Cumbria Rivers Trust surveyed a few sections of the river through electro-fishing and reported healthy populations of juvenile trout, and the odd large specimen tucked under a bank or bush.
We also can offer fishing on the beautiful Kentmere Tarn just a few miles up the valley from Staveley. There are 2 parts to the tarn. 1 is stocked with brown trout, and the other is wild fish. Both are fly fishing only, and catch and release is mandatory on the larger tarn. Fishing is often best early-mid and later in the season when the water is cooler. This is a fantastically peaceful spot to spend hours and hours happily fishing :-)
